I began brainstorming for this project with the thought in mind that I wanted to make classic forms of literature more accessible to more modern minded audiences. Seeing as I will be an educator somewhere in my future, I like to try and find ways to make the content presented in class into something that students find relatable, making it easier for them to understand it and appreciate its value. This project was no different in this way. I decided to take Blake’s “The Chimney Sweeper” from both Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience and represent them with modern and current issues that students might connect to in some way. With that being said, I decided to use various methods to highlight the differences between the two poems, honing on their different tones and content, picking apart the various messages that each has to offer readers. For my actual project, I decided to take The Chimney Sweeper from Songs of Experience and use it to highlight the issue of child labor that is very prevalent in the modern world. On this page I took time to mention countries across the globe, including the United States, that take part in child labor. For the page of Songs of Innocence, I highlighted various organizations that work to bring awareness and aid to children that suffer through such a lifestyle. Because of the hopeful tone in Songs of Innocence, I thought this was fitting. This project was something I wanted to gear towards my future students to show how an issue that was so pressing back in William Blake’s day is still relevant today. Students might be more capable of creating a connection with a piece if they can recognize the very same issues presented in the work in their own world.
